Longeing

Longeing (USA) or lungeing (UK English, informal USA) is a technique for training horses, where a horse is asked to work at the end of a long line and respond to commands from a handler on the ground who holds the line. It is also a critical component of the sport of equestrian vaulting. Longeing is performed on a large circle with the horse traveling around the outside edge of a real or imaginary ring with the trainer in the middle. From Wikipedia under the

(I moved my 2 mares to a new farm...) Help!? Q. So my two thoroughbred mares didn't like each other at all, before I moved them. Also, I've only had my younger mare for about 6 months, so they hadn't ever been moved somewhere together before. It seems that my older OTTB mare (11 years old) has "adopted" my younger one! (came off the track about 7 months ago, is 5 years old) It wouldn't be a problem to me, except I decided to put my older mare barefoot in her hind feet, and she is NOT doing well with it. She was in SO much pain yesterday, and I realized her heel angle is bad, and she's walking right on her heel bulbs. (My farrier should have noticed before he left! The bad angle isn't his fault though, I've been having issues with farriers, and he's my 3rd one in the past 5 months. … [cont.] Asked by mewjet18 - Wed Jul 1 15:36:53 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. First off, your older mare is probably annoyed that she is on stall rest. It's unlikely that she actually adores your younger horse as much as she adores you. I could see her being annoyed that you're playing with the younger horse instead of her. Now, what you need to do is get the younger horse dependant on - YOU -. Since she has this crazy dependancy on the older mare, you need to work her. Here's what I would recommend doing first off. Put the mare in the round pen and keep a close eye on her. Stay in the center, unclip her leadrope and watch her. If at any time she decides she needs to call to the other horse, it's time to start free lunging. Get her attention, get her listening and get her minding you. Get her to stop, back, etc.… [cont.] Answered by Karen z - Wed Jul 1 15:48:43 2009 Is there a humane and effective training method while longeing and riding so the horses don't get whipped?
Q. Horse training abuses My only concern is I've seen trainers smack, whip, shank...horses, especially stallions when they try to bite or if they show aggression. I'm not sure where the line is drawn between training and abuse. The only thing I can compare it to in my experience is dealing with aggressive dogs and for that no punishment is needed just patience and behavior modification. I'm just confused as to why it's so different with horses. I've also seen horses being hit repeatedly with maximum force on the hindquarters with a crop when they refuse a jump, and this happens in broad daylight in the showjumping arenas. I'm just getting into riding and want to be able to distinguish between responsible horsemanship and cruelty as every… [cont.] Asked by L - Sat Jan 2 06:26:50 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. The whip should never touch the horse while it is being lunged. It merely follows the horse as it describes a circle and guides him, for example if you want him to move out onto a bigger circle it is brought forward and pointed at the shoulder with the verbal command "Out". or if you want the horse to slow down and he has got himself wound up bring it in front of the horse's chest combined with the verbal command "Steady" or similar. A lot of lungeing problems are caused by the trainer walking around in a circle themselves and misuse of the whip. The trainer should be standing still and only stepping over his or her feet as the horse moves around them, marching up and down on the spot. As for riding, it is a question of teaching the… [cont.] Answered by zakiit - Sat Jan 2 06:40:19 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "longeing" |
