Desiderius

Desiderius (also known as Daufer or Dauferius; Didier in French and Desiderio in Italian) was the last king of the Lombard Kingdom of northern Italy (died c. 786). He is chiefly known for his connection to Charlemagne, who married his daughter and conquered his realm.

A. If you were to go through this life thinking that Erasmus was an Englishman, you would be lost. He was from the Netherlands. He was a Christian Humanist writer and satirist prior to and into the Reformation movement. It is said that "Martin Luther hatched the egg that Erasmus laid." He was higly critical of the Catholic Church and in that sense he was a Reformer, but it was his intent for the Church to reform from within rather than to split off like Luther did. Don't mistake me, however, Luther did not want to split off either, he was basically forced to by the Catholic Church. He had a friend, Thomas More, with whom he communicated regularly by post. A. Jan Hus (also spelled 'Huss' AI prefer Hus, myself A) criticised what he saw as the malpractices of the Roman Catholic Church. He was, by the way, about a century ahead of Luther. He supported basically the teachings of Wycliffe, believing in freedom of speech, poverty of clergy, punishment for 'notorious' sinners. They being Bohemian (Czechoslovakia ) taught that all properties owned by the Roman Catholic Church should be expropriated. He was denounced as a heretic and burned at the stake in 1415. Disiderius Erasmus was a contemporary of Luther. His Greek translations of the New Testament demonstrated flaws in the Latin versions. He published writings critical of the Roman Catholic Church and much of this was through satire. His… [cont.]
