Africa is the world's second largest and second most populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With 1.0 billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 65 territories (including 54 recognized states), it accounts for about 14.72% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagoes and has 54 sovereign states ("countries") and two states with limited recognition. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago – including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones. The African expected economic growth rate is at about 5.0% for 2010 and 5.5% in 2011. From Wikipedia under the

From Google Video Search: "africa" How can i help impoverished people in Africa besides giving to charity? Q. I would like to do my bit for under privilaged people in Africa but I'm a bit skeptical about giving to charities as I know all the money doesnt go to the cause. I would love to help people over there and know exactly who im helping and see their progress. How can I do this.? Is volunteering the only way? Please help!!! Asked by nads - Fri Apr 27 19:44:09 2007 - Community Service - 7 Answers - Comments A. The best way to help others is to be a good example of independent success, if you give African people money, food, etc. then that's HOW they get it from now on...You are not helping them, you are helping a parasitic political organization to spread propaganda... Why would they improve their position when you are sending all this help? They've already got it made! The best way to help these people is to let them discover what they can accomplish on their own...Or, if they are destined to suffer for their whole lives, then let them die quickly instead of stretching it out over years and years. YOU DON'T know these people...When you set out to help them you are only doing it to feel better about your status as a capitalist...a politic that… [cont.] Answered by Aku - Fri Apr 27 20:00:01 2007 How did Arabs come to invade and inhabit North Africa? Can anyone share some of the history?
Q. Or where can I learn more? I just find it fascinating that many people consider North Africa part of the Middle East, and separate it from "sub Saharan" Africa. I can't think of any other regions in the world where another culture/race took over and annexed a large part of the region. Asked by GreenGrasshopper - Thu Feb 17 22:25:36 2011 - History - 2 Answers - Comments A. During the middle ages (700s-1000s) the Arabs wanted to spread their newly-founded religion of Islam, therefore they spread from the Arabian peninsula through Nothern Africa and into Spain. It wasn't until the early 1000s when they attempted to continue their conquests into France when the Franks (French) fought them and once again claimed Spain as a Christian country. The people of Northern Africa however were already converted to Islam, and it was never fought. When the Muslims converted territories to Islam, they often married in with the native population well. Therefore even though Spain is a European country, it still has some darker people, due to the fact that at one point they had married into the Arab people. Same goes for the… [cont.] Answered by Jammin & Rockin! - Thu Feb 17 23:23:18 2011 From Yahoo Answer Search: "africa" |
